ASME A17.1, 2019 Edition – Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators

ASME A17.1 is a safety code for elevators and escalators that is developed and published by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME). The code sets the minimum requirements for the design, construction, installation, operation, testing, inspection, maintenance, alteration, and repair of elevators, escalators, moving walks, dumbwaiters, material lifts, and other types of vertical transportation systems.

ASME A17.1 covers a wide range of topics related to elevator and escalator safety, including requirements for machine rooms, hoistway and pit access, car and counterweight safeties, emergency lighting and communications, door and gate systems, electrical and mechanical equipment, and more.

The code is updated regularly to incorporate new technologies and advances in the industry, and compliance with the code is mandatory in many jurisdictions in the United States.

Equipment Covered by This Code

This Code covers the design, construction, operation, inspection, testing, maintenance, alteration, and repair of the following equipment and its associated parts, rooms, spaces, and hoistways, where located in or adjacent to a building or structure (see Section 1.2):

(a) hoisting and lowering mechanisms, equipped with a car, that move between two or more landings. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, elevators (see Section 1.3).

(b) power-driven stairways and walkways for carrying persons between landings. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, escalators and moving walks (see Section 1.3).

(c) hoisting and lowering mechanisms equipped with a car that serves two or more landings and is restricted to the carrying of material by its limited size or limited access to the car. This equipment includes, but is not limited to, dumbwaiters and material lifts; it does not include vertical reciprocating conveyors (see Section 1.3).
