What’s changed since the last update? 

BS 5839-6:2019+A1:2020 supersedes BS 5839-6:2019, which is withdrawn. Some of the principal changes are:

  • New recommendation that communal fire alarm systems should not normally be installed in purpose-built blocks of flats
  • Removal of Grade B and Grade E
  • Updating of guidance to consider the publication of BS 5839-1:2017 and other standards published since the last full revision of BS 5839-6
  • Recommendations have been amended with new text on warning it should not be assumed that children will be woken by fire alarm tones
  • New table on testing and servicing by grade
